Learning outcomes of the subject
Conocimientos fundamentales sobre pesca y biología de los peces. Objetivo: Proporcionar una introducción a la pesca y la biología de los peces y los métodos y procedimientos empleados en la evaluación de poblaciones.Al finalizar la Unidad, el estudiante deberá: 1. Comprender e identificar los principales recursos marinos vivos y las artes de pesca utilizadas para su captura 2. Comprender la sensibilidad de los recursos vivos en relación con las intervenciones humanas como la pesca, la contaminación y la destrucción del hábitat y conocer los efectos de la explotación en los diferentes componentes del ecosistema marino. 3. Estudiar la influencia de las condiciones ambientales en la disponibilidad y fluctuaciones en la abundancia de los recursos marinos 4. Estudiar varios tipos de pesquerías emblemáticas a nivel mundial (pequeños pelágicos, túnidos, especies demersales, cefalópodos)
Temary
1. Main concepts in fisheries biology. Population and stock unit, catches and fishing effort. Main biological parameters (reproduction, growth, mortality). Data collection frameworks.2. Main exploited living resources: fish, crustaceans, molluscs and algae. Fishing gears and techniques and main types of fishing vessels.
3. The exploitation of living resources: historical evolution and current situation in the world. Fishing in the European Union and Portugal. The fishing industry, economic, political and social considerations.
4. Basic knowledge of theoretical concepts used in stock assessment of commercially exploited marine living resources.
5. Ecological problems of fisheries. Multispecies aspect of fisheries. Bycatches. Interactions between fisheries.
