Descripción:

In Europe one of the challenges is rehabilitating aging buildings while containing climate change. We

have an opportunity to take advantage of by-products from key sectors of UE27 economy: steel and

construction. In the present work, the approach is to incorporate black steelmaking slag (EAFS, scrap

melting or first melting of the electric arc furnace slag), and white slag (LFS, steel refining by the electric

arc furnace slag) in matrices of inorganic nature (based on Portland cement materials binders). The

present study focuses on analysing the opportunities of using both by-products (co-products) as high

value-added solutions that promote rehabilitation through novelty and sustainable structural

composites.

Authors present some own researches on these inorganic matrices to which a degree of substitution

is applied in aggregates and cement constituents by EAFS and LFS. In consequence, the intention is to

analyse the opportunities of integrate in those (we call) siderurgical matrices, commercial technical

textiles as a kind of reinforcing core. This composite solutions could be called: FRCM (Fiber Cement

Reinforced Mortar).

Additionally, based on previous experiences (of the last 25 years), the opportunities for these FRCM

siderurgical reinforcement solutions, in low performance (poor mechanical strength) concrete beams,

will be concluded in present work.

Nowadays authors' investigations demonstrated the feasibility of designing siderurgical inorganic

matrices with high contents of: EAFS, as coarse aggregates and LFS co-products as fines aggregates and

supplementary cement materials. On the other side, several researchers (authors among them),

investigated FRCM based on natural aggregates and commercial cementitious binders (mainly based

on Portland cement and pozzolanic constituents), strengthened with commercial technical textiles

made os steel, or basalt or carbon fibres, as reinforcing core in the FRCM composite.

In present study FRCM composite will be tested for two points of view: material characterization

(mortar and textiles) and the strengthening of scaled reinforced concrete beams under four points

bending loads. These experimental results will be presented and discussed balancing the siderurgical

FRCM opportunities for future sustainable applications.
