MICROFLUIDICS & BIOMICS Cluster UPV/EHU (IT1271-19)

Period:
from 2019 to 2021
Financing entity:
Basque Government
Total amount:
244 481
Description:

Micro and nanotechnologies have reached the point in which they promise to enable fast progress in chemistry, medical research and clinical management. Innovative chemical/biological research and the design of rapid diagnostic tests will pave the way to a more efficient disease management by ultimately decreasing economical costs and enabling personalized medicine. However, only through the right integration of micro and/or nanotechnologies the creation of new products and applications will be a reality.

Since 2015 the teams of Marian Martinez de Pancorbo, Fernando Benito y Lourdes Basabe, have been working together synergistically in the development of analytical microsystems. The M&B Cluster is already a multidisciplinary team with a well-consolidated, internationally recognized expertize in genetics, chemistry, materials, microfluidics, analytical systems, cell biology, nutrition, medicine and molecular biology.

M&B Cluster teams are located at the Pharmacy school and the Lascaray Research Center of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Vitoria, Spain. Our core activity combines analytical chemistry with microfabrication, material science, cell biology and genetics, to develop, analytical microfluidic systems for point of care, rapid measurements and for biological studies. Point of care presents single use and disposable or portable (handheld) devices; they find applications in medical diagnostics, forensic science and environmental analysis, while type of devices are devoted for long-term analysis and continuous monitoring of cells.

Biologists, biotechnologists, chemists, pharmacists, medical doctors and engineers, which provide with an extra degree of multidisciplinary, form the current team of the M&B Cluster.
