After graduating in Medicine and Surgery, A Valdivieso obtained the General Medicine Position in Amorebieta (Vizcaya) in 1978, and then, between 1979 and 1982, he made the M.I.R. studies in General Surgery at Cruces Hospital. After a short period in Logroño Hospital as a General Surgery Assistant, he returns to Cruces Hospital as “Adjunto interino” in General and Digestive Surgery. In 1985, he joined Osakidetza as “Jefe de Servicio”, in General Surgery and Gastroenterology at Galdakao Hospital, becoming “Adjunto” a year later and “Jefe de Sección” in 1988, a position he maintained until 1995. During this stage, he combined the clinical practice with research, which begins at Cruces Hospital in 1984. The research is focused on the digestive system and the influence of pharmacokinetics in related surgeries, publishing his results in various important journals and participating in numerous congresses. In 1991, he obtained the PhD degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU. In 1995, he moved to Cruces Hospital as “Jefe de Sección” in General Surgery and Digestive Diseases, with special dedication to Hepatic Transplantation (where he is at present). Since February 1996 until March 2017, he has been the “SubDirector” of the Hepatic Transplant Program of the Basque Country, and from that date to the present as Director of the Hepatic Transplant Program of the Basque Country. In June 2010, he obtained the Senior Consultant Degree in Osakidetza, Basque Health Service (Professional Career level IV (maximum)). Towards the 2000 his studies focused in the hepatic transplant with the participation in several multicentric works with patients, both national and European. These works also result in several publications, both papers and conferences. In total, he has 87 publications and more than 238 congress communications, as well as several book chapters. During these years, he continues with the training and updating participating in numerous courses focused mainly on stomach, intestine and liver surgical techniques. At present, he also has interest in understanding metabolic syndrome in patients with liver transplants (one of the PhDs he supervises is focus on this). At the same time, he teaches training courses to nurses and doctors in hospitals throughout the State. In 1995, he obtained the position of Assistant Professor in the Nursing University School of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (Leioa), and in 2001, I become Professor of the same. In 2007, I became Professor of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine, University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (Cruces Unit).
