On the meaning of the basque particle ‘omen'

Abstract
The aim of this talk is to shed some light on the meaning and use of the Basque reportative particle ‘omen'. We will argue that ‘omen' contributes to the propositional content of the utterance of the sentence containing it. We will also show that, contrary to what most Basque dictionaries and grammars suggest, ‘omen' does not express the speaker's doubt or uncertainty about the truth of the proposition on which ‘omen' operates. We will end up contrasting our view some other proposals to analyse evidential particles, bases on speech act theory and theories of presupposition
