The aforementioned PhD thesis attempts to cover various aspects: firstly, the analysis includes the influence of reading the press on public opinion and the Spanish conscience as a whole, focusing on the specific role of reference played by El País in this respect. Furthermore and via propaganda processes and the construction of stereotypes, it considers rejection or even criminalization as an underhand form of social control.
Lastly, it analyzes the treatment in news handed out on the pages of this daily newspaper of the so-called "Basque conflict."
The main aim of the research is to find out and establish whether the information published by El País about the situation in the Basque Country is fundamentally based on an urge to find out what is happening or, whether, at the same time, this medium constructs the information according to its own guidelines and interests with the raw material of social data, albeit using the techniques, knowledge and strategies of social control. In the conclusions, attention should be drawn to the predominance of declarations as an approach to the source of information. According to the author, "this strategy provides journalistic elements based on opinions and value judgements more than on data and judgements based on fact."
