THE STUDY REFERS FIRSTLY TO THE GLOBAL CONTEXT OF THE MEDIA IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF GRAN BILBAO DURING THE PERIOD OF TIME CHOSEN, HIGHLIGHTING THE EVOLUTION OF THE AUDIENCE AND THE SOCIOLOGICAL PROFILE. SECONDLY, IT REFERS TO THE ORIGINS OF FREE RADIO IN COUNTRIES THAT WERE CONSIDERED PIONEERS IN TERMS OF THIS TYPE OF RADIO BROADCASTING, AMONG WHICH SPECIAL MENTION SHOULD BE MADE OF THE UNITED STATES, GREAT BRITAIN, FRANCE AND ITALY. THIRDLY, A HISTORICAL MENTION IS MADE OF THE ORIGINS OF FREE RADIO IN THE BASQUE AUTONOMOUS REGION, THEIR BEING CLASSIFIED INTO DIFFERENT TYPES I N CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER AS THEY EMERGED. TWO SAMPLINGS WERE ALSO CARRIED OUT, THE RESULT OF WHICH ENABLED THE OPINION OF LISTENERS OF THESE RADIO STATIONS TO BE DETERMINED, AS WELL AS THEIR PREFERENCES, THE REASONS THEY GIVE FOR LISTENING TO THIS TYPE OF RADIO STATION AND THE SOCIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF THESE LISTENERS. LASTLY, THE PROGRAMME PLANNING OF THE FREE RADIO STATIONS IS STUDIED, TAKING THE LEGALIZED OM NETWORK AS A REFERENCE.
