Group description

Introduction:

The recognized research group of the Basque Government ITSAS-REM (IT1514-22), 2022-2025, is dedicated to research activities in the field of energy (renewable energies in the marine environment), risk management and adaptation to climate change. The group is the result of the evolution of the also recognized research groups of the Basque Government SCM, Comprehensive sustainability in building systems and their materials, (IT781-13), 2013-2018, followed by E-CLEDER (IT1314-19), 2019-2021.

All the activities of the research group evolve towards achieving integral sustainability  , taking into account adaptation to climate change through a resilient design and with the implementation of renewable energies of offshore origin, taking advantage of the growth on its implementation.

From its remarkable multidisciplinary nature, this engineering group addresses the profiles necessary to meet the proposed energy-oriented profile through fluid-dynamics. The context in which the different activities are presented are aligned with the priorities of RIS3 strategy in the field of Energy optimization.

Publications:

The members of the group have shown an extensive portfolio of scientific publications of their results accounting 55 JCR papers, 6 book chapters and 40 international conferences apart from other publications based mainly in educational issues.

International collaborations:

CEMIE-OCEANO

The Mexican Center for Innovation in Ocean Energy CEMIE-OCEANO is the ocean energy research center with the greatest capacities for the development of technologies with high social and industrial impact, as well as the largest number of successful lines of research in Latin America.

Training:

The principal investigator is Coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus REM  master (Renewable Energy in the Marine environment), 2018-2022 as well as the recently awarded Erasmus Mundus REM PLUS, 2022-2026, as a continuation of the previous master degree.

Apart from that, the group is allocated in two main doctoral programmes and has supervised 6 PhD’s theses and more tan 50 master theses in the field.

Facilities:

Our group runs an experimental wave flume (EWF) of 12.5m long, 0.60m wide and 0.7m high. The software allows the paddle to follow a sinusoidal movement or any other higher order movement that turns into a progressive acceleration-deceleration pattern for the generation of waves and testing small prototypes of floating wind turbines platforms. Besides The Group has 2 workstations (Station 1: DELL precision 7920, 24 Xeon cores, RAM 32 GB. Station 2: DELL precision T7810, 16 Xeon cores, RAM 32 GB). In addition, as members of the UPV / EHU, there is the possibility of accessing the Arina Server, aiming to built and validate the numerical models, numerical wave flume (NWF) through computational fluid dynamics CFD.

Research Lines

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

  • The objective of this line is to minimize the effects of climate change from efficiency in the use of energy through the generation through renewable sources of offshore origin, taking advantage of the growth and advances of their implementation through an experimental wave flume (EWF) of 12.5m long, 0.60m wide and 0.7m high.

  • The experimental outcomes of the previous research line will be used to validate the numerical models built through CFD. For this, STAR CCM+ software suitable for solving many cases of fluid dynamics. One of the most complete on the market.
