Kelly notes: 'This memorandum concerns the same complex transaction described in the spurious diploma Pet 24 (S 1059). The protagonist is Brand, the monk who succeeded Leofric as abbot of Peterborough in late 1066, after serving as provost. [...] It seems safe to conclude that the details rehearsed in Pet 25 depend ultimately on authentic (if perhaps tendentious) documentation from 1066. One possibility is that the agreement between Brand and Askytel was recorded in Old English, perhaps in the form of a bipartite or tripartite choreograph, and that the present memorandum represents a Latin summary compiled for Peterborough use at a later date.' See Kelly, Charters of Peterborough Abbey, pp. 309-10; for discussion of memoranda at Peterborough, see her Introduction, pp. 97-9.
