Descripción y contextualización de la asignatura

This advanced course is offered in the second term of the Master's programme. It builds on the skills developed in the Fundamentals course offered in the first term. The course places a particular emphasis on the conceptual and empirical developments that have led to current theorizing in formal linguistics, within the generative approach to language, with special reference to topics related to the Syntax-Semantics interface.

- To summarise the evidence and analyses of proposals in natural language syntax, morphology and the syntax-semantics interface discussed in the course.

- To apply those analyses to novel data.

- To critically compare and evaluate those proposals.

The evaluation will be based on practical exercises and/or presentations assigned throughout the course. Students will have opportunities to discuss practical exercises and/or presentations with the teachers before submitting them.



As a continuous evaluation course, students who have completed 25% of the exercises cannot withdraw from the first call.



Students whose class attendance is less than 80% will not be able to pass the course.

Students who received a grade of "Fail" or "Declined to Sit" in the first call will be able to resubmit the exercise sets to improve their grade.

Temario

Syntactic theory, crosslinguistic variation and the syntax-semantics/pragmatics interface, with particular attention to: DP-internal syntax, relative clauses, degree expressions, ellipsis, coordination, left periphery, negation, questions, scope-interactions, and the grammar of temporal relations, among others.
