First publication date: 07/02/2025

The Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is strongly committed to continuous improvement in educational quality and adapting to new pedagogical demands. An increasing number of faculty members are actively involved in enhancing teaching practices and implementing innovative methodologies.
We want to highlight the dedication and success of Asier Aranzabal Maiztegi, Eva Epelde, and Maite Artetxe in the Chemical Engineering degree program, specifically in team-based learning. Their research, published in the prestigious journal Education for Chemical Engineers, became the most downloaded article of 2024, with 21,000 downloads!
Their work successfully addresses the common challenges of collaborative learning, such as:
✔ Unequal workload distribution
✔ Potential conflicts among team members
✔ Fair assessment of individual contributions
Through their research, they found that the Belbin methodology is key to forming balanced teams by considering the specific strengths of each student. This approach has proven to be more effective in achieving learning success compared to traditional group formation methods.
