Competencies

  • Be trained and achieve mastery in advanced theoretical categories relating to fundamental rights, in specific analytical methods, representing a broadening of the basic training received during degree-level studies. Be trained in judicial research in complex contexts, and with the participation of various public administration bodies, and thus be trained to apply the knowledge and techniques acquired through the Master's to resolve and foresee judicial issues, and adopt decisions in a timely and creative manner.
  • Be trained in (both in the setting of international tribunal jurisprudence, and domestic courts) taking a scientific approach to current analytical methods in law, above all in human rights, and the impact on societies in present-day democracies, developing a critical awareness of the various social notions of human rights legislation or public policies affecting these rights. Moreover, students will be trained in managing a conscious and autonomous learning process, leading to them developing continuous training.
  • Be trained in proposing innovative and original lines of research for resolving enforcement and development issues for fundamental rights in ever-more complex and globalised political systems (for example examining issues such as migratory movements, or multiculturalism), paying particular attention to the law compared with international experiences and jurisprudence the relevant courts have been able to determine on these themes.
  • Be trained in understanding the impact human development and civilisation has had on fundamental rights. Understand the importance of new technologies (such as information technologies, GMO products, or general technological advances in terms of the environment) and their impact on rights such as privacy, and respect for the home and correspondence, among others: an ever-increasing impact on our society which will become even greater in the future.
  • Be trained to research subjects aimed at achieving better enforcement and realisation of fundamental rights (taking into account the various legal instruments to protect these rights), critically analysing the social and economic environment with public law tools, and being prepared for producing research studies, forming conclusions and demonstrating skills in reasoning and persuasion. Be trained in analysing the legal system of public services offered by the various public administrations for securing fundamental rights, and social policies developed by public authorities, and analysing the positives and negatives as well as specific instruments of legal protection developed at an international, European, or domestic level.
  • Have the proven ability to use IT tools adequately, and ultimately have the right information available to study and analyse the legal issues presented (adapting to regulatory changes and advances in quality and innovation principles); and above all the capacity to use, manage, and interpret international documents (UN, Council of Europe, European Union), international sentencing tribunals (ECHR, European Court of Justice, International Criminal Tribunals), and other States' courts, especially those with constitutional jurisprudence, as well as jurisprudence in domestic courts.
  • Students should be capable of carrying out critical analysis and evaluation, and synthesising new and complex ideas.
  • Students should demonstrate their ability to come up with, design, put into practice, and employ the right process for their research with academic rigour.
  • Students should demonstrate their systematic understanding of their field of study, and their mastery of the skills and research methods related to that particular field.
  • Students should know how to communicate their area of knowledge with colleagues, the academic community as a whole, and society in general.
  • Students should make a contribution, through their original research, that broadens the horizons of understanding, and should produce a substantial corpus - some of which should be suitable for publication nationally or internationally.
