Igor Horrillo has a degree in Pharmacy (2003) from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and obtained his PhD in 2011 with the defense of the thesis entitled "Regulation of the central noradrenergic system after pharmacological modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis -adrenal. Effect of antidepressant treatment”, with the qualification Excellet cum laude. Currently, he holds a position as Associate Professor in the faculty of pharmacy. As a teacher, he teaches classes in the Pharmacy Degree in the subject Pharmacognosy, and he is currently the coordinator. He has also participated in Teaching in Doctorate and Master programs both at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and at the University of Deusto. His research interests focus on the study of the etiopathogenic bases of depression, and in particular, the influence of stress on the development of the disease. In addition, it studies the mechanisms of action of classic antidepressants, as well as new mechanisms that can help design new antidepressants with a better efficacy profile. He also studies, in collaboration with clinicians, inflammatory factors in the plasma of patients with depression looking for possible biomarkers of disease and condition. More recently, it has been incorporated into the postmortem study of the 5-HT2A receptor in the brain of patients with schizophrenia. He is currently the Vice Dean of Innovation, Communication and Social Projection of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
