AimsToggle Navigation
Core competence:
- Develop the ability to design automation and control systems.
The core competence will be complemented by other competences related to the industry branch:
- Overall knowledge of automation and control in industry for production improvement.
- Study, design and implementation of processes.
- Communicate adequately the knowledge, procedures and results obtained, using the vocabulary and terminology specific to the area of industrial automation and control, together with the appropriate means to do so.
- Adopt a responsible, orderly attitude at work and willing to learn, considering the need for continuous training that the exercise of the profession will undoubtedly require.

In order to instill in students the competences set out above, the following syllabus is divided into two main blocks:
MASTERCLASS PROGRAMME
PART I (theoretical section): INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATISATION
Topic 1: Introduction to Automation. Definition of general concepts.
Topic 2: Logic algebra. Combinational and sequential automatisms.
Mathematical foundations necessary for the modelling of automatisms.
Topic 3: Modelling of automatisms using the GRAFCET standard.
Description and use of the Grafcet standard.
Topic 4: Materialisation of automatisms: P.L.C.- Programmable Logic Controllers.
Implementation by means of programmable automaton of the designed automatisms.
PART II (theoretical section): INDUSTRIAL CONTROL
Topic 5: Introduction to Industrial Control. Definition of general concepts.
Topic 6: Modelling of Physical Systems.
Transfer Functions. Description by means of mathematical models of the systems to be controlled.
Topic 7: Temporal Response of systems.
Analysis of the system in its transient and permanent regime.
Topic 8: Basic Control Actions. Parameter setting.
Definition of the basic control actions and the methods for their adjustment.
PROGRAMME OF LABORATORY
PART I (practical section): Industrial Automation.
Fundamentals of the CX-programmer.
Programming of FESTO modules.
PART II (practical section): Industrial Control.
Basic fundamentals of Matlab and Simulink.
Analysis and control of 1st and 2nd order systems.
MethodologyToggle Navigation
There are two types of teaching in this subject: lectures (3 ECTS) and laboratory sessions (3 ECTS). In addition, of course, students are invited to drop in during tutorial hours to get individual support and clarify any doubts not solved by other means. They can also use e-mail to clarify doubts.
MASTER CLASSES
Lectures include both theory and practical exercises. In the teaching process, the following components will be taken into account: objectives of the subject, characteristics of the students, situation of the teaching process, etc.
LABORATORY
The laboratory sessions will serve to put into practice what has been learned in the lectures and to help in the assimilation of the theoretical and technical concepts.
Before going to the laboratory, students should read the instructions of each session and, if possible, download them to have them at hand.
In addition, they should know the theoretical part to be worked on beforehand.
Assessment systemsToggle Navigation
In this section we will detail the aspects related to the ordinary call.
WEIGHTING
The course is divided into two parts and each part consists of two sections, one dedicated to theory and the other to laboratory. The weighting of the parts and sections is as follows:
PART I: Industrial Automation: 4/10
Weighting of the theory section: (2/10)
Weighting of the practical section: (2/10)
PART II: Industrial control: 6/10
Weight of the theoretical section: (4/10)
Weight of the practical section: (2/10)
TYPES OF ASSESSMENT AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS
Students will choose between two types of assessment; continuous assessment (A) or final exam (B).
A) Continuous assessment
The main method of assessment of the subject is continuous assessment. The waiver of the call will be carried out under the conditions established by the current legislation.
In the continuous assessment, students' knowledge is progressively increased through exercises, practices and evaluations aligned with the educational objectives of the subject. The characteristics and dates of all the tests to be taken in the subject will be communicated through eGela with sufficient advance notice. If necessary, students will be asked to confirm their attendance (via email or eGela) before the tests. If any person needs another means of communication to receive notifications, he/she should contact the teacher and inform him/her as soon as possible.
In relation to the laboratory, a student who chooses continuous assessment but does not attend the laboratory sessions will have a grade of 0 in the part of the laboratory that he/she does not attend: Part I (industrial automation) and/or Part II (industrial control). In each part (industrial automation, industrial control), a maximum of one unexcused absence will be accepted, the other absences will have to be justified if the grade for the work done in the continuous assessment is to be maintained. This means that even if the coursework is submitted and the continuous assessment tests are taken during the course, if there is more than one unexcused absence in each practical part (Industrial Automation, Industrial Control), a grade of 0 will automatically be awarded for that part.
B) Final Exam
A student who is not following a continuous assessment is entitled to be assessed in the final exam. In the final exam, each part will be assessed through an exam (4 tests in total): Part I theoretical section and laboratory section and Part II theoretical and laboratory section. The evaluation of the practical section will take place before the official examination at a place and date announced sufficiently in advance.
Students who have chosen the final assessment mode and do not take the final exam will have a NO SHOW on their transcript.
PASSING THE COURSE IN THE ORDINARY EXAM SESSION
In order to pass the course in the ordinary exam session, in addition to having more than a 5 (out of 10) in the final grade, each section (Part I theory, Part I laboratory, Part II theory, Part II laboratory) must be passed independently (minimum grade for each section 5/10). If one of the sections is not passed, the maximum mark will be 4/10, and if the total mark obtained is less than 4/10, the mark obtained will be awarded. Those sections that are passed in the ordinary call will be kept for non-ordinary calls, but not for the next academic year.
In the case of both the continuous assessment and the final exam, the sections not passed in the course (part I theory section, part II theory section, part I laboratory section, part II laboratory section) will have to be made up in the extraordinary exam, so the sections passed will be saved for the last exam of the course.
