Prizes SGIker V Scientific Photography Contest
Aitor Larrañaga Espartero and Helena Dias David, winners of SGIker V Scientific Photography Contest

The images " Abrazo regenerativo" by Aitor Larrañaga Espartero, and "Peligro de los océanos" by Helena Dias David, have won the first prize in the SGIker V Scientific Photography Contest, in the modalities of Science and Technology of Materials and Life Sciences respectively.
This time, the jury, chaired by the Vice President for Research, Fernando Plazaola, and consisting of experts in the various fields of science involved, had to choose the winning photographs from a total of 61 images submitted to the contest by 37 researchers, of which 69% have done so in the field of Life Sciences, and 31% in the Materials Science and Technology. As in previous editions, the Jury's decision was particularly difficult because of the quality of the works presented, highlighting the two winners for its visual impact, the technical difficulty, the scientific result, the originality and the teaching style of each one.
The image taken by the researcher Helena Dias David, Department of Plant Biology and Ecology , "Peligro de los oceanos", shows small cells of gender Ostreopsis microalgae that live in the sea and are capable of producing toxins damageable to human health when produced in large quantities.
In the category of Science and Technology of Materials, the winning entry, "Abrazo regenerativo" of researcher Aitor Larrañaga Espartero, Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, shows the binding of a series of biodegradable polymeric fibers 3 microns in diameter.
The awards public event will be held soon and the date will be posted on this portal, and through EHU Taula. In the event the winning images will be displayed and the winners will be given a iPad Mini as prize of the contest.All the images can be viewed at the following link.
