Since 2016, the UPV/EHU has managed to triple the number of patents. In its 40-year history, it has developed more than a thousand, becoming the largest generator of patents in the Basque Country. The various SGIker units have contributed to this by providing analytical support to the various research groups.
One of the patents carried out at the UPV/EHU originated in the Central Analysis Service of Bizkaia (SCAB). It has consisted of the development of a training bait for police canine units to detect a very dangerous explosive (acetone triperoxide, TATP). The head of the Ertzaintza canine unit asked Dr. Luis Bartolomé for a solution to the impossibility of finding a commercial product that would allow reliable and safe training of his units.
The development of this recently patented bait was carried out under the direction of Dr. Luis Bartolomé at the SCAB of the SGIker with the help of the student of the Official Master's Degree in Forensic Analysis at the UPV/EHU, Ainhoa Isla. The license to use this patent has allowed the aforementioned former student to create a technological "start up", located in the business incubator of the Leioa campus, ZITEK, for the commercialization of this product in the near future. In this way, the SGIker contribute to the research and creative fabric of the UPV/EHU and support research staff in the creation of patents, licenses and contracts
