Monitoring of the catalytic and kinetic activity of new materials for the removal of various contaminants with SCAB support (2016/12/23)

One of the groups of our Faculty of Science and Technology of the UPV / EHU, ImaKris/MaKrisI works with metal-organic materials of type MOF (Metal-Organic Framework). These materials are characterized by having a high surface area and being able to adsorb different compounds in both aqueous and gaseous media. These properties give them an applicability and high potentiality for the elimination of certain industrial pollutants. Some of the most important applications focus on eliminating emerging pollutants and dyes in aqueous media.
One of the ways to study the elimination of this type of compounds is by monitoring and monitoring the concentration of these pollutants under the performance of these materials through different techniques of analysis such as Gas Chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC / MS) in the case of semi-volatile emerging pollutants or UV-vis spectrophotometry in the case of dyes. In addition to the importance of observing their potential operation as potentially useful materials for the removal of these pollutants, it is important to know their catalytic activity. Simultaneously in the studies of degradation / monitoring of the pollutants under the action of these materials by means of GC/MS, the different products that are being formed can be quantified and identified. This fact makes possible the simultaneous study of the different reactions (oxidations, condensations ...) that can be carried out as well as their reaction/elimination kinetics.
The instrumentation available to the SCAB and the support of the SGIker has enabled several of these studies to be developed concluding in scientific publications of interest.
