Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

An optional 4th year subject taught in Spanish in the Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage. This is an advanced level subject that builds on the knowledge acquired in previous years, but especially on the 3rd year optional subject: Techniques and Procedures for the Preparation of Printed Works on Paper and their Conservation. This is a second level of learning as it is taken in the 4th year. The subject explores in depth the conservation and restoration treatments on paper with a view to intervention on real works. Therefore, it is NOT RECOMMENDED that students who have not taken the subject of conservation and restoration of paper on printed works in the third year enrol in this subject in the fourth year, as they will have serious difficulties in following it due to a lack of fundamental knowledge regarding the intervention on real works of art.

MethodologyToggle Navigation

Theoretical-practical subject of continuous evolution for the knowledge and control in the application of the various treatments appropriate to the different types of work. In order to carry out the treatments, firstly, a preliminary phase of studies of the pieces and preliminary tests on specimens will be carried out, for a subsequent design of the intervention proposal. All of this will be accompanied by a discussion of the case studies in class and a preliminary report. Finally, the intervention on a real work will be addressed. The practical work will always be accompanied by the corresponding reports.

The class timetable is condensed into one session per week for 15 weeks (duration of a four-month period). The timetable is divided into two blocks. In the first block (which will last approximately one hour), the theoretical contents will be developed, the practices that will be carried out in class will be described and the safety measures to be taken into account will be detailed. Subsequently, the rest of the class time will be spent in the workshop for the practical activities. For safety reasons and out of respect for the integrity of the real pieces to be treated, people who do not attend the theoretical sessions will not be allowed access to the workshop without a justified cause. On the other hand, people who have not taken the 3rd year introductory course in conservation and restoration of printed works will not be allowed to intervene in the works.

The work intervention will be carried out in groups or individually depending on the complexity of the works.

The subject tutorials are to clarify or discuss issues or questions that could not be solved in class time, they are not to replace the classes that are not attended. If there is any time incompatibility, you should talk to the teacher in charge of the subject.
