Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

The course expands the knowledge acquired by the student in the 2nd year “Inorganic Chemistry I” course and, in particular, it aims at introducing the student to the fundamentals of three main areas of modern Inorganic Chemistry: (molecular) Coordination and Solid State Chemistry and Organometallics. Special stress is placed on the tremendous power of symmetry (Representational Analysis) to simplify the study of many issues in these three areas, as well as in many others.

By the end of the course, the student should be capable of:

1. Applying Representational Analysis to solve simple problems in Chemistry.

2. Rationalizing the structure, reactivity and physicochemical properties of inorganic materials based on the relevant theories.

3. Mastering the nomenclature and formulation of coordination and organometallic compounds.

4. Using the information provided by different instrumental techniques in the characterization and structural determination of inorganic chemistry materials.

5. Resolving both qualitative and quantitative problems in Inorganic Chemistry based on previously learnt models.

6. Identifying and analysing new challenges in the field of Inorganic Chemistry and proposing different strategies to solve them.



In addition to the above mentioned competences, specific to the course, the student is also expected to further develop other competences, both specific and transversal, assigned to the M’odulo Fundamental and described in real decreto RD139372007; namely,



i. To know the structure, properties, preparation methods and the most important reactions of inorganic compounds.

ii. Ability to plan and perform in the lab - safely and using adequate techniques - simple processes of synthesis and characterisation of inorganic compounds as well as to evaluate and interpret experimental data.

iii. Understanding the relationship between structure and properties of different types of inorganic materials as well as knowing their most relevant applications.

iv. Ability to select different instrumental techniques for the characterisation of chemical substances.

v. To be able to present in oral and written form, in an understandable way, phenomena and processes related to Chemistry and related disciplines.

vi. Ability to search and select information both in Chemistry and other scientific fields using the available bibliography in books, journals and the internet.

vii. To be able to relate Chemistry with other disciplines, as well as to understand its impact on today's society.

Theoretical and practical contentToggle Navigation

1. Introduction to symmetry in Chemistry. Classification of molecules according to their symmetry. Representational Analysis: simple applications in Chemistry.

2. Coordination Compounds. Structure and bonding. Types of ligands. Nomenclature. Coordination and stereochemical indices. Bond theories. Spectroscopic and magnetic properties. Stability of coordination compounds. Substitution reactions: kinetics and mechanisms. Electronic transfer reactions: external and internal sphere mechanisms.

3. Inorganic solids. Synthesis and characterization techniques. Introduction to crystal structure determination. Classification according to bond type. Prediction of structures depending on the type of bond. Defects in solids. Non-stoichiometric solids.

4. Organometallic compounds. Classification of organometallic compounds: nature of the bond and type of ligands. Effective atomic number rule. Compounds with π-acceptor ligands. Compounds with π -donor ligands. Organometallic compounds with metal-carbon σ-bonds. Reactivity. Catalysis.

5. Inorganic compound characterization techniques. Spectroscopic (infrared, Raman, UV-VIS, …) and diffraction techniques.

6. Inorganic Chemistry Lab. Synthesis of various coordination and organometallic compounds. Preparation of different inorganic solids. Structural and physical simple characterization: x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, magnetometry and UV-VIS and IR spectroscopy.





MethodologyToggle Navigation

The course is mainly made up of master classes, 45 hrs in total, in which the most important concepts are treated. The student is then expected to broaden the acquired knowledge with another 67.5 of personal work outside the classroom. Part of this time will be dedicated to solving homework and assignments that will be then discussed during the 15 hrs of problem classes.

The five 1 hr seminars assigned to the course will be dedicated to introducing the most relevant characterization techniques in Inorganic Chemistry.

Finally, a total of 25 hrs distributed in 5 lab sessions will be dedicated to acquiring hands on experience of the theoretical concepts previously introduced in class.

    • Written test to be taken (%): 80
    • Realization of Practical Work (exercises, cases or problems) (%): 10
    • Individual works (%): 10

Ordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

The final grade of the course will take into consideration the different parts of the the following sections:

- Exercises, homework and assignments throughout the course. 10% of the final grade

- Lab notebook, including the answers to the questions handed during the experimental sessions. 5% of the final grade

- Lab work: ability in the execution of the different experiments and compliance with security measures will be assessed. 5% of the final grade

- Lab practicals evaluation/exam, consisting of a series of brief questions related to the experiments carried out in the lab. 10% of the final grade

- Written exam; 70% of the final grade. There will be two partial exams during the year that that will allow the student - if passed with a mark of 6/10 or above - to avoid sitting the final exam for the corresponding part of the course.

A minimum mark of 4/10 is necessary in each of the sections above in order to pass the course.

The use of books, notes or notes, as well as devices or telephone, electronic, computer, or other devices, by the student is completely prohibited during the realization of any evaluation test.



Those students not willing to be evaluated with the above method (evalucion continua) will need to submit a formal letter to the lecturer in charge explaining so in the first 18 weeks of the academic year starting in September. Those students no attending the written exam will immediately be considered to renounce their right to be evaluated in the first call of examination (convocatoria ordinaria).

In the second call (convocatoria extraordinarIa), the final grade will be derived uniquely from a written exam. Those students no attending the written exam will immediately be considered to renounce their right to be evaluated in the second call of examination (convocatoria xtraordinaria).
