Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

Language D I: Galician Language is an optional course for third and fourth-year students offered in the degrees of English Studies, Philology, Basque Studies, and Translation and Interpretation. The course provides students with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to master oral and written competencies in Galician, as outlined by level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In this way, it contributes to the comprehensive education of any university student and enhances their adaptability to an increasingly diverse social environment in terms of language and culture.

Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation

The competencies/results to be developed throughout the course are:

- Understand and recognize the characteristics of spoken and written language.

- Know the basic techniques and resources to promote the comprehension and production of oral and written texts in Galician.

- Recognize and correctly pronounce the vowel and consonant sounds unique to Galician (open and closed vowels, nasal velar consonants, etc.) in appropriate contexts.

- Acquire the ability to produce coherent discourses following the phonetic and prosodic standards of Galician.

- Acquire the ability to utilize current digital and bibliographic resources for the study of the Galician language (dictionaries, grammars, databases, etc.).

- Differentiate between the concepts of language and speech, as well as the descriptive and prescriptive perspectives of grammar.

- Consolidate an understanding of language as a set of diverse varieties (diasystem) susceptible to objective, detailed, and unbiased description.

- Promote the development of oral expression skills through dialogue, improve the ability to convey ideas using compositional and expressive techniques, and stimulate the adaptation of oral discourse to various contexts and registers.

- Analyze the process of the Galician language's formation as a unique linguistic variety within the Romance context, from its origins to the present, with attention to the main mechanisms of linguistic change, the transformations of Latin, and the primary phonetic dynamics that explain the transition from Vulgar Latin in Gallaecia to medieval Galician-Portuguese.

- In relation to the above, encourage the comparison of Galician with other Romance languages, especially those genetically closer (Portuguese, Spanish) or those that share a similar sociolinguistic situation (Basque, Catalan, Occitan, Sardinian...).

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

Regular attendance to the subject and continuous effort in both classroom assignments (individual and group) as well as in non-presential tasks and activities developed by the Centro de Estudos Galegos will be highly valued. Therefore, the final grade will be the result of the following components:

- Official written exam: 40%.

- Official oral exam: 20% oral. The oral exam will be recorded to provide evidence for both grading and student review.

- Participation and completion of exercises: 30%.

- Attendance and participation in activities organized by the Centro de Estudos Galegos: 10%.

FINAL ASSESSMENT

According to the Regulations governing the assessment of students in official degree programs, as stated in article 8.3 applied in the 2018-19 academic year: In any case, students have the right to be evaluated through the final assessment system, regardless of whether they have participated in continuous assessment or not. To do this, students must submit in writing to the responsible faculty member of the course the waiver of continuous assessment, for which they will have a period of 9 weeks for semester-long courses and 18 weeks for annual courses, counting from the beginning of the semester or academic year respectively, according to the academic calendar of the institution.

The percentage breakdown for the Final Assessment will be as follows:

- Official oral exam (30% of the final grade).

- Official written exam (70% of the final grade).

Passing each part will be necessary to pass the entire course.

In both the continuous and final assessment modalities, IF IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CONDUCT TESTS IN PERSON, they will be conducted electronically:

- The official written exam will be done through eGela questionnaires. If this is not possible, questionnaires will be sent to students in a digital file for them to submit their answers within a specified period.

- The official oral exam will be conducted via video call.

VERY IMPORTANT:

- In all tests and assessable tasks of any assessment modality (continuous or final) and in any examination session (ordinary or extraordinary), ORAL AND WRITTEN EXPRESSION WILL BE EVALUATED, and spelling and grammatical errors will be penalized.

- Any test, exercise, or assignment of any assessment modality (continuous or final) and in any examination session (ordinary or extraordinary) will be considered a FAIL if any FRAUDULENT ACTION is observed (such as copying or plagiarism). Academic fraud is understood as dishonest and unethical practices, from copying in an exam or written test to appropriation of texts and copyright infringement (plagiarism and/or cyberplagiarism), identity theft, or buying and selling academic work.

- During the development of any assessment test, the use of books, notes, or other materials, as well as telephones, electronic, computer devices, or other devices by students will be strictly prohibited. Their use will always result in a failing grade for the test.

- In the completion of any assessment test, students may be required to IDENTIFY THEMSELVES (ID, passport, or university card).

Extraordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

The evaluation for the extraordinary examination period will consist of two tests:

- Oral exam (30% of the final grade).

- Official written exam (70% of the final grade).

It will be necessary to pass each part in order to pass the entire course.

IN CASE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CONDUCT TESTS IN PERSON, they will be conducted electronically:

The official written exam will be conducted through eGela questionnaires. If this is not possible, the questionnaires will be sent to students in a digital file for them to submit their answers within a specified period.
