Irati Barandiaran obtained de title of Chemical Engineering in July of 2011, in the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). At the beginning of 2012 she incorporated to the research group "Materials + Technology" of the department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, at Engineering College of Gipuzkoa, where she started her doctoral thesis about nanostructured polymeric materials with magnetic properties. In order to perform this thesis she obtained a Ph.D fellowship from UPV/EHU. In October of 2012 she finalized the Master in Renewable Materials, and in March of 2016 she obtained the title of international Doctor. During her doctoral thesis, she did a stay of three months in "Technische Universität München". In 2018, she obtained a postdoctoral position at the university for two years.

Since 2020, she is an associate professor at Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering department at the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Her research is focused on finding new polymeric thermosets based on renewable resources. On one hand, she tries to improve their thermo-mechanical properties by nanostructuring with block copolymers, or, on the other hand, she tries to modify the resin or works with new curing agents.
