Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

Third Language III: Galician Language is an elective course for third and fourth-year students offered in the degrees of English Studies, Philology, Basque Studies, and Translation and Interpretation. This subject, conceived as a continuation of the course Third Language II: Galician Language, offers students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to master the oral and written competencies in the Galician language, as specified by the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In this way, it contributes positively to the comprehensive education of any university student and their adaptability to an increasingly diversified social environment in terms of language and culture.



Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation

The competencies/results that will be developed throughout the course are as follows:



. Understanding and recognizing the characteristics of oral and written language.

. Knowing the techniques and basic resources to promote comprehension and production of oral and written texts in Galician.

. Recognizing and correctly pronouncing, in appropriate contexts, the vowel and consonant sounds specific to Galician (open and closed vowels, velar nasal consonant, etc.).

. Acquiring the ability to develop coherent discourses consistent with the phonetic and prosodic features of the Galician standard.

. Acquiring the capacity to use current computer and bibliographic resources for the study of Galician language (dictionaries, grammars, databases, etc.).

. Discriminating between the notions of language and speech, as well as descriptive and prescriptive perspectives of grammar.

. Consolidating an understanding of language as a set of diverse varieties (dialects) susceptible to objective, detailed, and unbiased description.

. Promoting the development of oral expression skills through dialogue, enhancing the ability to convey ideas through compositional and expressive techniques, and stimulating the adaptation of oral discourse to different contexts and registers.

. Analyzing the process of shaping the Galician language as a distinctive linguistic variety within the Romance context, from its origins to the present day, with attention to the main mechanisms of linguistic change, transformations undergone by Latin, and primary phonetic dynamics explaining the transition from Vulgar Latin of Gallaecia to medieval Galician-Portuguese Romance.

. In relation to the above, fostering the comparison of Galician with other Romance languages, especially those genetically closer (Portuguese, Spanish) or with which it shares a similar sociolinguistic situation (Basque, Catalan, Occitan, Sardinian...).

Theoretical and practical contentToggle Navigation

Contents:



a. Communicative contents: expressing opinions, interests, feelings, desires; conveying orders, requests, and advice; reporting what other people have said (direct and indirect speech); counter-arguing and sequencing arguments; making hypotheses and conjectures; narrating events; conditions, consequences, and warnings.

b. Grammatical contents: relative clauses, superlative, adjective modifiers, placement of unstressed pronouns, connectors, temporal particles, reflexive verbs, conjugated infinitive, periphrases.

c. Lexical contents: media (TV, newspapers, radio, internet, social media...), journalistic field (music/sports/social chronicles...), academic field, leisure and tourism, environment, sports, art.

d. Socio-cultural contents: formation and history of the Galician language, internal linguistic varieties of Galician, phraseology.

MethodologyToggle Navigation

The subject will be developed through a combination of theoretical exposition and the completion of exercises and practical activities. The practical process will be carried out both individually and collectively and will always seek active interaction between the teacher and the students.



Among the activities that will be carried out are:



- Oral and written comprehension activities.

- Oral and written expression activities.

- Resolution of grammar exercises and vocabulary acquisition.

- Familiarization with dictionaries, manuals, internet resources, etc.



Additional Activities:



Participation in activities proposed by the Centro de Estudos Galegos (exhibitions, talks, conferences, film screenings, poetry recitals, etc.).

The development of comprehensive and communicative skills is supported by practical work in classes through the use of reference bibliography and various audiovisual media that bring us closer to the most attractive aspects of Galician reality and culture (music, cinema, literature, etc.), and with special interest, to the History of the Galician Language and the History of Galicia. Additionally, learning will also be reinforced through activities carried out by the Centro de Estudos Galegos (CEG), which will be mandatory attendance as they take place during class hours.

Continuous Assessment



Regular attendance and continuous effort in both classroom assignments (individual and collective) and non-presential tasks, as well as activities developed by the Centro de Estudos Galegos, will be particularly valued. Therefore, the final grade will result from the final computation of the following sections:



- Official written exam: 40%.

- Official oral exam: 20%. The oral exam will be recorded for grading and review purposes by the students.

- Participation and completion of exercises: 30%.

- Attendance and participation in activities organized by the Centro de Estudos Galegos: 10%.



Final Evaluation



According to the Regulations governing student assessment in official degree programs in its Article 8.3 applied in the 2018-19 academic year: In any case, students have the right to be evaluated through the final evaluation system, regardless of whether they have participated in continuous assessment or not. To do so, students must submit in writing to the responsible professor of the subject their waiver of continuous assessment, for which they will have a period of 9 weeks for semester-long subjects and 18 weeks for annual subjects, counting from the beginning of the semester or academic year, according to the academic calendar of the institution.



The percentage breakdown for the Final Evaluation will be as follows:



- Official oral exam (30% of the final grade).

- Official written exam (70% of the final grade).

Passing each part is necessary to pass the entire subject.



In both continuous and final modalities, IF IN-PERSON EXAMS CANNOT BE CONDUCTED, they will be conducted electronically:



The official written exam will be conducted through eGela questionnaires. If this is not possible, the questionnaires will be sent to the students in a digital file for them to submit their answers within a specified time frame.

The official oral exam will be conducted via video call.



VERY IMPORTANT:



- In all assessable tests and tasks in both continuous or final assessment modalities (ordinary or extraordinary), ORAL AND WRITTEN EXPRESSION WILL BE EVALUATED, AND ORTHOGRAPHIC AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS WILL BE PENALIZED.

- Any test, exercise, or assignment in any assessment modality (continuous or final) and in any exam session (ordinary or extraordinary) will be considered FAILING if any FRAUDULENT ACTION is observed (such as copying or plagiarism). Academic fraud is understood as dishonest and unethical practices, from copying in an exam or written test, to the appropriation of texts and infringement of copyright (plagiarism and/or cyberplagiarism), to identity theft, or buying and selling of academic works.

- During the development of an assessment test, the use of books, notes, or any electronic, computer, or other devices is strictly prohibited. Any such use will result in automatic failure of the test.

- During any assessment test, students may be required to IDENTIFY THEMSELVES (ID card, passport, or university card).

- Oral exam (30% of the final grade).

- Official written exam (70% of the final grade).
