Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

German Literature III is a compulsory subject in the third year of the Bachelor's Degree in Philology. The programme in German Language and Literature is undoubtedly an important point of reference. The existing demand, both in the academic environment and outside it, for personnel adequately trained in communication skills in the German language, which go beyond the simple oral and written practice of a language and imply a good knowledge of the cultural, social and historical reality associated with it, as well as a good capacity for analysis and interpretation of it.

In terms of employment, there is a high demand for knowledge of German language and culture in the labour market: there are intense commercial relations between the Basque Country and German-speaking countries, particularly Germany. Along with the demand for professionals with a solid knowledge of German and its culture, the demand for qualified teachers and trainers of German, who are needed to contribute to the training of these professionals, is also growing. This demand is particularly evident in the private education system, as well as in public bodies and institutions and in private companies.

The subject German Literature III is one of the basic subjects of the German Itinerary of the Bachelor's Degree in Philology and is taught in the second year in Spanish. It is part of the German Literature Module and is complemented by German Literature I, II and IV. The four subjects of German Literature run from the second semester of the second year to the first semester of the fourth year.

The German Literature Module as a whole offers a general overview of the history of German literature from its beginnings to the present day. Through the study of paradigmatic texts, students learn to orient themselves in the overview of the main periods, movements and authors of German-language literature as well as in the corresponding historical stages. They will also become acquainted with different theoretical perspectives and the corresponding terminology for the literary analysis of German-language texts and metaliterary discourse.

There are no prerequisites for admission to the German Literature Module.

This particular subject is focused on the student acquiring the knowledge and skills specified below in the field of German-language literature between the last quarter of the 19th century and the Second World War, so that at the end of the four-month period he/she will be able to interpret literary phenomena and critically comment on literary texts from the following literary movements and literary periods: Naturalism, Literature of the fin de siècle, Expressionism, Literature of the 1920s, Literature between 1933 and 1945.

The language of instruction will be German, but the necessary explanations will be given in Spanish on request. Given that this subject is taught jointly to students of the Degree in Philology of the German pathway and to students of other degrees and pathways, a differentiation will be made between both groups when it comes to evaluation. Students enrolled in the subject German Literature III will use German in the elaboration of comments, work and writing of the written test at the end of the course, so the necessary level will be parallel to that of the course German Language VI. Students enrolled in the subject Literature of the Second Language I: German Language may choose the language in which they will hand in their work and take the corresponding tests.
