Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

"Ancient History of the Basque Country" is an optional subject in the third year of the Degrees in History, Art History, Basque Studies and Geography and Territorial Planning. It is taught in the second semester and it consists of 6 credits. It is integrated into the minor specialization in "History of the Basque Country".

The essential training objectives pursued in its development are:

- To provide a capacity for analysis and an adequate understanding of the progressive formation of the communities documented since pre-Roman and Roman times in the territories that are currently assigned to the Basque Autonomous Community and bordering areas, focusing especially on the organizational structures (social, economic, political, religious and cultural).

- To furnish, with theoretical-practical contents, contact with the different specific sources (written testimonies and archaeological evidences) related to mentioned population groups.

- To develop the methodological bases for the adequate historical analysis of the direct evidences (epigraphy, numismatics, archaeology) and indirect evidences (Greco-Latin authors).

- To achieve knowledge of the different historical factors of an endogenous and exogenous nature that intervened in the evolution of the organizational structures of these communities.

- To develop skills in the analysis of the historical information available for the study of these communities, which allow for the elaboration of synthesis and structuring qualified discourses.

With all this, students will be able to move towards professional practice in the fields in which historical records and knowledge of history are managed.
