Irene Balza is a full-time interim teacher in the Department of Language and Literature Didactics. She holds a PhD in Linguistics (2018) with International Doctorate Mention. Her doctoral thesis, entitled Modal Interpretation and Syntactic Structure: the case of Basque “behar”, was completed in joint supervision by the UPV/EHU and the Université Bordeaux-Montaigne (France).

In 2003 she joined a research group on natural language processing at the UPV / EHU. During the years 2004-2006 she worked as a linguistic researcher at the Diana-Teknologia Company, also dedicated to the processing of natural language.

In 2005 she began teaching at the UPV/EHU. Since then, her professional activity has always been developed at the UPV/EHU.

During the years 2012-2018 her research has focused on formal linguistics; concretely, on the derivation of modal expressions at the syntax-semantic interface. She have been a member of the Theoretical Linguistics HITT group at the UPV/EHU and has participated in several projects related to language architecture and linguistic variation. She has made various reseach stays at IKER-UMR5478-CNRS. Besides theoretical linguistics, her current research also evolves around grammar didactics.
