After a research grant of the Basque Government he joined in 1994 the local geology industry as exploration geologist. He presented his doctoral thesis on stratigraphy of Albian carbonates and siliciclastics in 2000. In 1999 he was appointed lecturer on geology in the Department of Mine Engineering of the UPV/EHU. In 2007 he moved to the Department of Stratigraphy and Paleontology being appointed lecturer on Sedimentology and Basin analysis. He was leader in research projects (2006-09) on hydrothermalism in collaboration with TOTAL S.A. In 2006 and 2007 he specialized on Aptian and Albian ammonoids in the Natural History Museum of London, gaining a European Synthesys grant in 2007. Recently he focuses on the study of Albian ammonoids, and on the relationship between fracturing, hydrothermalism and diagenesis. Other interests are tectonic control on sedimentation, basin analysis and palaeoecology of marine invertebrates. Scientific articles (>60), two research mentions (CNEAI) and participation in 20 research projects support his career.

He currently teaches in the Geology degree, and taught in the Quaternary Master of the UPV/EHU; he has been also teaching for eigth years (2008-15) in an international field-course of the Geoscience Training Alliance, Advanced Concepts in Carbonate Exploration and Reservoir Characterization, designed for specialized staff of the oil industry. He is currently the head of the Stratigraphy and Palaeontology dpt. of the UPV/EHU.
