Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

Second Language IV: Classical Language is an optional subject of 6 cr. that is taught in the Degrees of Philology (Hispanic, French and German), English Studies and Basque Studies; it corresponds to Greek Language II and is one of the six subjects (36 cr.) that must be taken by those who wish to obtain the mention in Second Language: Classical Language. It is taught in the third year, during the second term.



Second Language IV: Classical Language is devoted to the study of Classical Greek through Ionian-Attic prose texts, accessible to students at beginners' levels. In addition to grammar and language in general, cultural and literary aspects are also dealt with, which allow the texts to be contextualised and better understood.



The work carried out in Second Language IV: Classical Language (together with that of Second Language III: Classical Language = Greek Language I) enables students to acquire the basic fundamentals of morphology and syntax of the classical Greek language, as well as to be introduced to the practice of translation and the analysis of simple Greek texts written in prose.

Competences of the Module of Greek Philology:

LEARNING OUTCOMES



Upon successful completion of the subject, the student will:



-Reasonably know the basic fundamentals of the morphology and syntax of the classical Greek language.



-Analyse and correctly translate simple texts in Ionian-Attic prose.



-Understand the genre of these texts, their cultural context and their author.



-Explain clearly and in a reasoned way how to analyse and translate texts.



-Implement his/her knowledge of the most frequently used Greek lexicon.



-Synthesise explanations given in the classroom, and obtain, select and manage additional information effectively through traditional media and ICT.

THEORETICAL CONTENTS



1. Nominal morphology



Reasoned explanation of the 3rd declension; the adjective: inflection and degrees of comparison; main pronouns.



2. Verbal morphology



Characteristics of the Greek verbal system: types of conjugation, grammatical accidents of the verb, elements of verb forms. Thematic conjugation: formation of tenses, especially present, future and aorist. Athematic conjugation: characteristics and reasoned explanation of MI verbs; athematic aorists and long E aorists.



3. Syntax of non-personal forms of the verb: main uses of the infinitive and the participle.



4. Syntax of the subjunctive and the optative: main uses of the subjunctive and the optative.



5. Sentence syntax: main coordination and subordination links.



6. General characteristics of Greek literature, culture and thought.

CLASS WORK



Given the nature of the subject, each session will generally consist of a theoretical part, in which the theoretical contents of the subject will be explained in a reasoned way, and a practical part, focusing on morphosyntactic analysis and translation of texts, as well as grammatical exercises. The above-mentioned practical activities (exercises, analysis and translation of texts) are to be prepared individually outside the classroom and then reviewed with the teacher, although they will

sometimes be done in class. The use of the dictionary, a very useful working tool which must be learnt to use, will also be given special attention. In addition, students will present different tasks, which will be assessed by the teacher. The presence in the classroom of the teacher and students will be used as an opportunity to work in groups and encourage their participation in the sessions.



WORK OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM



The work to be done by students without the presence of the teacher includes: preparation of texts, study and grammar exercises; preparation of different tasks related to the contents of the subject.



TUTORIALS



They favour communication between student and teacher, and allow students to resolve any doubts they may have about the subject individually, as well as to propose activities to improve their learning. They are not compulsory but they are useful. Tutorials can also be held at a distance.

There are two evaluation modalities:



1. Continuous assessment. Students will be assessed by means of different tests and exercises to be carried out throughout the four-month period. There will also be an exam.



1) Assignments and deliverable activities: 50 %.



2) Final exam: 50 %.



The final grade in this case will be obtained from the average of the grades obtained in each of the parts. However, in order to pass the course, it is necessary to obtain a minimum mark of 5 in each of the parts (assignments and final exam).



In the case that the activities to be handed in during the course are passed, but the final exam is failed, the mark of the part passed will be retained until the extraordinary exam. No marks will be kept for subsequent courses.



2. Final assessment. Students will be assessed by means of an exam, which will include the translation and grammatical analysis of a text similar to those studied during the term. Students may also be asked to complete and hand in a piece of work.



The final grade will be the grade obtained in this single test.



ATTENTION! Correct use of the language will be taken into account in both the continuous assessment and the final assessment.



ASSESSMENT CRITERIA



In general, the learning outcomes outlined above will be assessed: which learning outcomes have been achieved and with what level of understanding and application.



The exercises and tests carried out during the course will make it possible to assess whether the progressive learning is adequate; if necessary, complementary activities will be proposed in order to improve the students' learning.



REGULATIONS IN THE EVENT OF WAIVER OF CONTINUOUS AND/OR MIXED EVALUATION



UPV/EHU regulations provide for assessment by means of a single final exam which accounts for 100% of the mark for the subject. All students have the right to be assessed in this way, but in order to do so they must waive continuous assessment. The regulations governing student assessment in official undergraduate degrees state (Chap. II, Art. 8): "In any case, students will have the right to be assessed through the final assessment system, regardless of whether or not they have participated in the continuous assessment system. To do so, students must submit a written waiver of continuous assessment to the lecturer responsible for the subject, for which they will have a period of 9 weeks for four-monthly subjects and 18 weeks for annual subjects, starting from the beginning of the four-month period or academic year respectively, in accordance with the academic calendar of the centre. REGULATIONS IN THE EVENT OF WAIVER OF THE ORDINARY CALL FOR EXAMS



According to the Regulations (Chap. II, Art. 12),



1.- The waiver of the call will result in the qualification of not presented or not presented.



2.- In the case of continuous assessment, if the weight of the test is higher than 40 % of the grade of the subject, it will be enough not to take the final exam for the final grade to be no-show. Otherwise, if the weight of the final exam is equal to or less than 40 % of the grade for the subject, the student may waive the exam within a period of at least one month before the end of the teaching period of the corresponding subject. This waiver must be submitted in writing to the lecturer responsible for the subject.



3.- In the case of a final assessment, failure to sit the exam set on the official exam date will result in the automatic waiver of the corresponding exams.



Extraordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

The evaluation of the subject in the extraordinary call will consist of a single final test that will account for 100% of the grade.



In the case of students who have obtained positive results in the continuous assessment, these results will be maintained, as well as the corresponding grading percentage: continuous assessment 50%; final written test 50%.
