Graduate in Biological Sciences (1984) and PhD by the UPV/EHU (1995). Since 1989, he has been a lecturer in the Department of Immunology, Microbiology and Parasitology. He currently teaches in the Degrees of Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Biotechnology, as well as in the Official Masters in Microbiology and Health, and in Biodiversity, Functioning and Ecosystem Management. He has been a member of the Biotechnology Degree Studies Commission from 2013 to 2018, being its Coordinator between 2015 and 2018. He has been a member of the Academic Commission of the Master in Microbiology and Health since 2015.



He is Principal Investigator of the Biomics Research Group of fungi and bacteria (group A of the Basque University system). His lines of research mainly deal with virulence, rapid diagnosis and detection of new antifungal targets of pathogenic fungi of the genera Aspergillus, Candida and Scedosporium/Lomentospora. He has co-directed 5 doctoral theses and has participated in 29 research projects and 9 research contracts, being principal investigator in 7 of them. He is co-author of 41 research articles, 12 review articles, 3 book chapters and more than 170 contributions to national and international congresses. He is also one of the inventors of 3 active patents.
