Iñigo Azua Perez is an associate professor at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and teaches undergraduate degrees (degree in biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, and biotechnology), and master´s degree (Microbiology and health from the Department of Immunology, Microbiology and Parasitology).

His research focuses on the study of aquatic microbial ecology, and specially on the role of prokaryotes and protozoa in the carbon and nitrogen cycles. Currently he has 2 grants: one by MINECO (ENZYME) and another one by UPV/EHU (MARINE MICROBES). His current research focuses on the study of the effect of ocean warming on microbial processes, especially on the processing of carbon by prokaryotes and on bioprospection of beneficial prokaryotic capacities in saline environments.

He has participated as a researcher in 20 research projects focused on the study of diverse microbial activities in aquatic systems, ands specially in 10 of them in the marine environment. From this he has 17 publications in various scientific jornals and more than 50 contributions to national and internationak scientific meetings.

He has received positive evaluation in two six years evaluation for research merits, and is an active collaborator of press media.
