Asier Blas (Donostia, 1977) is a doctor (2011) in Political Science and an associate professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. Since 2006, he is a professor at the UPV/EHU. He currently teaches Comparative Politics, Spanish and Basque Political System, Citizen Participation and International Politics. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Parte Hartuz Parte consolidate research group. His research lines are models of democracy, management of national conflicts (power-sharing, federalism, and secessionism), international politics and democratic innovation. In 2012, Blas won the X Prize Manuel Giménez Abad for his work “Patterns of Democracy in Spanish Autonomous Communities . He has dozens of academic publications, the last two articles are “The Jewel in the Crown: Co-optive Capacity and Participation During Austerity in Cardiff and San Sebastian-Donostia” (IJURR, 2018) and “Power-sharing coalitions in the Basque Country (1987–1998): centripetal coalitions vs. consociational coalitions“(Nations and Nationalism, 2018). Blas has been a regular contributor to media in the Basque Country, including the Euskal Irrati Telebista (EITB), Hamaika Telebista, Argia magazine, Berria newspaper, Grupo de Noticias or Gara newspaper. Since February 2018, he is the Head of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.
