Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

The subject Latest Artistic Trends is one of the basic subjects of the 4th year of the Art History Degree and is taught during the first semester. It is located within the History of Contemporary Art module and is complemented by the subjects Artistic Avant-garde, History of the Art of Enlightenment and the 19th century or History of the Art of Enlightenment and the 19th century in Spain. This subject develops the analysis and study of the artistic movements after the Second World War, from 1945 to the 1980s. Given its practical and applied nature, it serves to gain an in-depth understanding of the artistic languages that emerged in those decades, which is why The work that will be developed in this subject will allow students to recognize and interpret any of the trends and artistic works of said period. To take this subject without excessive difficulty, students must have a historical-artistic mastery of the rest of the subjects that make up the Contemporary Art module and especially of the Historical Avant-garde subject.

CA1. Identify and analyze the artistic trends that emerged after 1945, integrating them into their historical-cultural context. (G001,G002,G006, G007 / CM01, CM01)

CA2. Conceptually characterize the artistic trends of the second half of the 20th century, establishing their relationship with the avant-garde of the first half of the century. (G001, G002, G004, G007 / CM01, CM02, CM03)

CA3. Handle with a critical spirit and analyze sources, texts, documents and other material testimonies or supports essential for the understanding and interpretation of artistic trends that emerged after 1945. (G004, G005, G006, G007 / CM03, CM04)

CA4. Develop one's own, reflective discourse appropriate to the university degree level, establishing interrelationships between the different artistic trends of the second half of the 20th century. (G001, G002, G006, G007 / CM01, CM02, CM03, CM04)



LEARNING OUTCOMES



That the students, once they know the transformations experienced by the historical avant-garde, understand the particular, social, cultural and political circumstances in which the artistic movements emerged after the Second World War, developing critical thinking in this regard.

That the students master the specificity of the vocabulary of the movements after the Second World War and make correct use of it in its plastic-literary context.

That the students demonstrate sufficient knowledge in relation to the conceptual bases of artistic languages, the most relevant artists and the fundamental works of each movement analyzed.

That the students know the most relevant bibliography, as well as the artistic literature associated with the main artistic movements of the second half of the 20th century.

That the students critically assess the interrelation between artistic proposals, considering the socio-cultural context and explaining the influence of the historical framework on the art of the second half of the 20th century.

That the students be able to develop and defend a directed work, taking as a starting point the specific bibliography as well as the appropriate documentary and bibliographic sources, showing a sufficient level both in their written development and in their oral presentation.

Theoretical and practical contentToggle Navigation

The evolution of the plastic arts since 1945. New York as a new prominent artistic center. The artistic context after the Second World War is presented. North American abstract expressionism and European informalist painting are formally and conceptually analyzed.

The 60s and 70s: The expansive era. Contemporary movements and trends in the Western artistic context. The artistic context since the late 1950s is presented. The various figurative and abstract trends that develop in the United States and Western Europe are analyzed. It delves into the process of dematerialization of the work of art and the consolidation of process art, conceptual art and action art.

Art in the 80s: The introspective era. Postmodern thought or the review of the past The artistic context of the 80s is presented, its idea of a break from the avant-garde and the return to painting. The emerging movements and trends from the Italian Transavant-garde to the new New York painting are formally and conceptually analyzed.

MethodologyToggle Navigation

Theoretical-master sessions: Presentation and explanation by the teacher of the fundamental theoretical contents of the subject, as well as the methodological guidelines necessary for the development of the directed work, the face-to-face and non-face-to-face practices and the personal work of the students.



In-person practical sessions: Analysis and commentary of artistic works and audiovisual materials of interest to the subject carried out by the students under the supervision of the teacher.

Oral presentations of the directed works.

Tutorials to monitor the teaching-learning process.

Non-face-to-face practical sessions: Analysis and commentary of artistic works and audiovisual materials of interest to the subject that will lead to the construction of critical and reflective comments.

WRITTEN OBJECTIVE TEST (exam). 50% of the final grade. Specific competencies: CA01, CA02, CA03, CA04.

IMAGE COMMENTS: The following aspects must be included:



Plastic and formal analysis of the work

Artist or trend to which it belongs.

Specify the chronology.

Develop the artistic and thinking context.

Analyze the fundamental conceptual bases of the trend or movement.

Know your previous references and note their influence and subsequent significance.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Correct identification of the works of art proposed for analysis.

Attribution of authorship, movement or trend and correct chronology of the proposed works.

Correct knowledge of the plastic and formal characteristics of the different trends of the contemporary era and the reasons for their connection to a precise historical-cultural context.

Correct and well-argued knowledge of the main conceptual aspects of the artistic movements analyzed.

Adequate incorporation of written sources and bibliographic references in relation to the proposed works.

Correction, organization and conceptual synthesis of the contents of the written exposition, using the specific terminology worked on in the subject.

Appropriate construction of written discourse considering its coherence, clarity and order in the expression of ideas.



DIRECTED WORK. 25% of the final grade. Specific competencies: CA01, CA02, CA03, CA04

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

1.Correct development from a formal point of view:

Appropriate expression using the specific terminology worked on in the subject.

Clear and orderly structure of work and oral discourse.

Relevance and coherence of the audiovisual material used.

Correct presentation and compliance with the stipulated deadlines.

2.Content criteria:

Appropriate approach.

Quality of the content and relevant and coherent presentation of the same.

Correct use of written and visual documentation with the inclusion of appropriate bibliography and webgraphy.

Critical assessment in the development of conclusions.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Clear, orderly and structured construction of oral discourse.

Correct use of appropriate technological resources

Appropriate use of communicative resources.

To pass the subject it is essential to pass the objective written test and the practical part: (directed work and classroom practices).



Evaluation in the ordinary call.

Students will have the right to be evaluated through the final evaluation system, regardless of whether or not they have participated in the continuous evaluation system. To do this, students must submit in writing to the teaching staff responsible for the subject the waiver of continuous evaluation, for which they will have a period of 9 weeks, counting from the beginning of the semester. In the case of waiving continuous evaluation, the final test will consist of three evaluation exercises that allow achieving all the competencies associated with the evaluation of this subject.

Extraordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

The evaluation of the subjects in the extraordinary calls will be carried out exclusively through the final evaluation system in which the students will be able to obtain 100% of the grade. The final evaluation test of the extraordinary call will consist of three evaluation exercises that allow achieving all the competencies associated with the evaluation of this subject.

NOTICE: In the case of students who have completed continuous evaluation in the ordinary call, for the extraordinary call of that same course (June) the grade for the practical part will be maintained if it has been approved.
