Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

This elective course is taught in the 3rd and 4th years of the History of Art Degree, in the second semester and in the morning. It is part of the History of Modern Art module. It is a theoretical-practical subject, in which, together with classroom teaching and practical classes, field practices and other activities are carried out.

It analyzes the History of Renaissance and Baroque Art in the Basque Country from a global point of view that includes stylistic and iconographic analysis, and the evaluation of the patrons and artists. Because of its enormous identity with the History of Renaissance and Baroque Art in Spain, it is recommended that students previously take this subject, taught in the 3rd year, during the first four-month period.

Other subjects such as History of Renaissance Art, History of Baroque Art and the elective Modern Iconography adequately complement the contents of the course “History of Renaissance and Baroque Art in the Basque Country”.

Much of the artistic heritage of the Basque Country is composed of Renaissance and Baroque works, so this subject is essential to carry out professional activities in museums or public institutions related to the cultural management of our territory.

MethodologyToggle Navigation

Various teaching methodologies are used in this course. First of all, lectures on the contents of the subjects will be carried out, always accompanied by audiovisual materials. Students will be required to participate in occasional debates on specific topics and in the commentary of specific works of art.

Theoretical-practical expositions will be complemented with autonomous learning activities by the student. These activities will consist of field practices, individual work and directed readings.

1.Theoretical-magisterial sessions:

The professor will expose the fundamental theoretical contents of the subject as well as the methodological guidelines necessary for the development of teamwork, face-to-face and non-face-to-face practices and the student's personal work.

2. Practical sessions:

- Practical classroom sessions:

The students, with the help of the teachers, will analyze and comment on works of art, documentary sources, directed readings and audiovisual material of interest for the subject, proposed by the teachers.

- Practical sessions outside the classroom. Field practices:

Among the planned field practices, one of them is to Oñati to understand the beginnings of the Renaissance in the Basque Country through chapels, funerary monuments and, especially, the University of Sancti Spiritus. At least another will be carried out in the city of Vitoria, focusing on Renaissance palaces and funerary monuments, and a third, also in Vitoria, aims to study the classicist architecture of the convent of San Antonio, the work of Gregorio Fernández in the parish of San Miguel and the Churrigueresque altarpiece in the parish of San Vicente.

El programa de la asignatura presenta varias lecciones que pueden ser estudiadas perfectamente ante las obras originales.

- Semi-attendance practical sessions:

There will be a learning task with practical character in which a work will be elaborated that the students will have to carry out outside the classroom. The topic must be previously agreed with the teachers, and carried out by the students from the search of information from different sources in libraries, museums, etc.

The result of this commentary will be previously delivered in writing to be assessed, modified, corrected and evaluated. It will be done preferably in groups and will lead to the construction of a cooperative commentary that will be presented orally in the classroom.

3. Tutorials, to follow up the teaching-learning process, at the student's request and established by the professor.

4. Non-presential activities:

Preparation by the student of the different proposed tasks:

-Realization of the practical work indicated above.

It is very convenient to rehearse previously the oral presentation of the work, since this allows to identify weak points, provides security, helps to control times and improves the final presentation.

-Individual reading of obligatory character:

ECHEVERRÍA GOÑI, P. L.; VÉLEZ CHAURRI, J. J., «Arte moderno», en CASTAÑER LÓPEZ, X. (ed.), Arte y arquitectura en el País Vasco. El patrimonio del Románico al siglo XX, Madrid, Nerea, 2003, pp. 53-100.

-Preparation by the student of the objective written test.
