Virginia Muto was born in Italy, where she attended all her studies including the university. She graduated in Mathematics in 1983 with the highest grade. Between 1983 and 1985, she got a fellowship to study in Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica in Rome. With another fellowship from Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, she spent almost four years at the Technical University of Denmark where she obtained the Ph.D. degree in 1988. Afterwards, she spent almost two years as post-doctoral fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (EEUU).

Since her wedding in September 1990 with a Spanish fellow, she got another post-doctoral fellowship from the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia to work at the UPV/EHU. Since then, she belonged to the Departamento de Matemática Aplicada y Estadística e Investigación Operativa, until agoust 2020, and now to the Departamento de Matemáticas, as “profesora titular”.

In 2000, she started a period fully dedicated to administrative work in the Facultad de Ciencia y Tecnología (ZTF-FCT) that lasts two mandates with the dean team of Prof. Juan Ramón González Velasco, December 2000 - January 2007. After staying in the deanery, she comes back to the department where she has been the Director from June 2008 until August 2020. It is important to mention that since January 2016 she has the accreditation as Full Professor.
