In the conventional workflow of prosthetic and restorative dentistry, both for mounting the plaster model of the mandibular dental arch on the mechanical articulator and for adjusting certain parameters of the mechanical articulator, interocclusal records made with wax are usually used (figure 1).

However, in the digital workflow of prosthetic and restorative dentistry, these interocclusal records have been replaced by virtual records called virtual interocclusal records (figure 2A). Currently, these records can be obtained directly from the patient's oral cavity using intraoral scanners (figure 2B).

However, certain aspects of the digital interocclusal records obtained using intraoral scanners are unknown: accuracy of the contact points obtained by them, their validity for mounting the digital replica of the mandibular dental arch in the virtual articulator, the influence of different factors on their obtention, etc. Therefore, the aim of this research line is to investigate these unknown aspects.

The progress made to date in this research line has been disseminated through articles published in scientific journals.
