General and basic competencies:
G001 - Acquire knowledge and understand the meaning and relevance of theories, concepts and methodologies in the context of the (inter)disciplinary field of audiovisual communication.
G004 - Analyze, interpret, explain and critically assess events, social processes, texts and communication projects.
G005 - Communicate in an argumentative manner, projects, achievements and results of work and research in different genres, formats and media.
G006 - Develop abilities and skills related to participation, management and optimization of teamwork, applying informed criteria to decision-making and evaluation of results.
CB1 - Demonstrate knowledge in an area of study that starts at a secondary education level and also includes some aspects that imply knowledge from the forefront of their field of study
CB2 - Know how to apply knowledge in a professional way and have the skills that are usually demonstrated through the development and defense of arguments and the resolution of problems within their area of study
CB3 - Have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (usually within their area of study) to make judgments that include reflection on relevant issues of a social, scientific or ethical nature

Specific competences
C2CC04 - Communicate, argue and present the objectives, procedures and achievements of communication work and research, applying conventions of the different communication media.
C2CC05 - Interpret and critically assess the communicative phenomenon in the light of different theories.
Learning outcomes:
1) Identify the main narrative, expressive and rhetorical resources used by the so-called "film language", as well as its main theoretical and historiographical currents.
2) Link the stylistic characteristics of a certain film, author or school to the economic/industrial and cultural/social context from which they arise.
3) Establish relationships between the specificities of a certain cinematographic creation and those of the works that precede and/or succeed it.
4) Encourage a critical spirit around the contents and the way in which they are expressed in the films under analysis.
5) Provide a solid theoretical and terminological base from which to develop tasks such as commenting, criticizing, analyzing and interpreting any cinematographic work, whatever the period.

This course looks at the history of cinema from its origins at the end of the 19th century up to the moment in which a classic paradigm is completely developed and starts showing its cracks, leading to the ‘new cinemas’ in the 1960s. The program is based on 5 blocks:
1.The birth of cinema
2.Avant-garde cinemas
3.Classic Hollywood.
4.The grounds of modern cinema.
5.Peripheral cinemas
Practical content
Together with the theoretical explanations, we will analyze and discuss certain landmark films and particular sequences.

1)Continuous grading
Final grade will be based on these three assignments:
* Written assignment (50%)
* Practical exercises (20%)
* Group Project (30%)
The specificities of every assignment will be explained at the beginning of the course and every detail will be available on eGela.
Together with theoretical explanations the student is expected to watch one or two films per subject in her/his own time. Content of these films is subject of being evaluated. The film list will be handed out at the beginning.
2)Final assignment
*Available according to student regulation (article 43.C)
*To be completed at the set time of the final exam.
*Written assignment.
*100% of the final grade
