Group description
Dr. Haritz Sardon is the head of the Catalysis and Sustainable Polymers Group at BERC-POLYMAT (https://haritzsardonlab.com/) and currently Assistant Professor at the University of Basque Country. The catalysis and Sustainable Polymers group overall research aims to prepare new functional polymeric materials using sustainable polymerization. Specially, their investigations involve the synthesis of new polymers using “green” polymerization processes such as monomers from polymer recycling, reagents from renewable sources or the use of less hazardous organocatalysts. The group has 4 different research lines including 1 in sustainable polymers and another in additive manufacturing. Indeed, the group intends to design new polymers with not only competitive mechanical properties but also considering their end-of-life assessment. To do so we investigate not only the use of monomers from renewable sources but also from plastic waste. After, they implement these new mateials in sustainable manufacturing methods. In spite of the great promise of additive manufacturing as an advanced form of future manufacturing, there are still fundamental challenges with respect to sustainability that need to be addressed. Some of the material needs for additive manufacturing include sustainable sources of printing inks, resins, and filaments, as well as pathways for polymer recycling, upcycling, and chemical circularity.
The International standing and high regard in the field of sustainability is evidenced by the coordination of an ITN-EJD in chemically recyclable packaging materials and several feature articles and reviews including a review article in Nature “Dynamic polymer network points the way to truly recyclable plastics” Nature 568, 467-468 (2019) and in Chemistry of Materials “Sustainable Materials and Chemical Processes for Additive Manufacturing”. Dr. Sardon has received several awards recently including the ACS Macromolecular Young Investigator Award (2021) and the Research Excelence Award for Young Group Leaders by the Spanish Royal Society (RSEQ) (2021) and Research Excelence Award for Young Group Leaders by the Spanish Polymer Society (GEP) (2020). He has published more than 100 scientific articles and 5 patents in total. His h-index is 38 (Google scholar, 5/2021) and has received over 4000 citations. He participated as editor in Polymer Chemistry about Plastic Circular Economy

Research Lines
ADVANCED MATERIALS AND PROCESSES
- The group in designing new photocatalyst able to mediate nucleophilic substitutions to enhance the number of resins that could be polymerized
- The group is investigating new material-based 3D printing routes to tune cell behaviour on-command and promote de regeneration of healthy tissues such as cartilage, bone and ligament. These materials are typically stimuli-responsive or present surface features that enable the control of cell fate.
SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING
- The group is potentially developping chemistries to allow the printing of biobased materials such as BSA with little or no modification for different applications
- The group is producing new inks based on biobased origin to produce sustainable plastics. Moreover, the recyclability of this inks is considered after production.
The Catalysis and Sustainable Polymers Group at BERC-POLYMAT has a Long standing collaboration with the Polymerization Catalysis and Engineering group leaded by Prof. Daniel Taton in LCPO at the University of Bordeaux (https://www.lcpo.fr/research/teams/polymer-catalysis-and-self-assembly). They have recently collaborated in a SUSPOL-EJD an European Joint Doctorate in "Organocatalysis and Sustainable Polymers" were they jointly supervised one PhD Student Amaury Boisson and now they are involved in another European Joint Doctorate program about the synthesis, characterization, structure and properties of novel non-isocyanate polyurethanes. They have published up to 8 joint publications including highly cited articles such as Synthesis of Polyurethanes Using Organocatalysis: A Perspective published in Macromolecules in 2015.
