This doctoral programme has been running since the academic year 2014-2015, and operates in conjunction with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia/BarcelonaTech (UPC), the University of Cantabria (Unican) and the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU), with the latter as coordinator. It has a de facto association with the UPC and the UPV/EHU Schools of Architecture, and with the Humanities Department and the School of Civil Engineering at the Unican.

The programme periodically organises a Doctoral Conference in the three cities of Barcelona, Santander and Donostia-San Sebastián.

There are currently over 70 doctoral theses registered on this programme, and one doctoral student recently won the UPV/EHU Extraordinary Doctorate award for her thesis.
