The living thing did I follow; I walked in the broadest and narrowest paths to learn its nature.

Con centuplicado espejo he captado su mirada cuando tenía cerrada la boca: para que fuesen sus ojos los que me hablasen.

Lorsque la vie se taisait, je recueillais son regard sur un miroir à cent facettes, pour faire parler son oeil.

With a hundred-faced mirror did I catch its glance when its mouth was shut, so that its eye might speak unto me.

Eta bere begiak hitz egin zidan.

Y sus ojos me han hablado.

Et son oeil m'a parlé.

And its eye spake unto me.

Baina, edonon biziduna aurkitu dudan tokian, bertan aurkitu dut obedientzia hitza ere.

Pero en todo lugar en que encontré seres vivientes oí hablar también de obediencia.

Mais partout où j'ai trouvé ce qui est vivant, j'ai entendu les paroles d'obéissance.

But wherever I found living things, there heard I also the language of obedience.

Bizidun oro obeditzailea da.

Todo ser viviente es un ser obediente.

Tout ce qui est vivant est une chose obéissante.

All living things are obeying things.

Se le dan órdenes al que no sabe obedecerse a sí mismo.

Whatever cannot obey itself, is commanded.

Honelakoa da bizidunen mota.

Así es la índole de los vivientes.

C'est là la coutume de ce qui est vivant.

Such is the nature of living things.

Eta hau da hirugarren entzun nuena: agintzea obeditzea baino zailago da.

Pero esto es lo tercero que oí: que mandar es más difícil que obedecer.

Voici ce que j'entendis en troisième lieu: commander est plus difficile qu'obéir.

This, however, is the third thing which I heard-namely, that commanding is more difficult than obeying.

Eta ez agintariak obeditzaile guztien pisua jasan behar duelako soilik, eta pisu honek erraz zanpa dezakeelako: -

Y no sólo porque el que manda lleva el peso de todos los que obedecen, y ese peso fácilmente lo aplasta: -

Car celui qui commande porte aussi le poids de tous ceux qui obéissent, et parfois cette charge l'écrase: -

And not only because the commander beareth the burden of all obeyers, and because this burden readily crusheth him: -

Saio bat eta arrisku bat agertu izan zait beti agindu orotan;

Un ensayo y un riesgo advertí en todo mandar;

Dans tout commandement j'ai vu un danger et un risque.

An attempt and a risk seemed all commanding unto me;

y siempre que el ser vivo manda se arriesga a sí mismo al hacerlo.

Et toujours, quand ce qui est vivant commande, ce qui est vivant risque sa vie.

and whenever it commandeth, the living thing risketh itself thereby.

Aún más, también cuando se manda a sí mismo tiene que expiar su mandar.

Et quand ce qui est vivant se commande à soi-même, il faut que ce qui est vivant expie son autorité et soit juge, vengeur, et victime de ses propres lois.

Yea, even when it commandeth itself, then also must it atone for its commanding.
