THE UNESCO CHAIR OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION OF THE UPV / EHU PARTNER OF THE NEW LIFE VIA DE LA PLATA PROJECT TO BE DEVELOPED IN SALAMANCA
The University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, through the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development and Environmental Education, is one of the associated beneficiary partners of the LIFE Vía de la Plata project (LIFE 19 CCA/ES/001188) co-financed by the European Commission and promoted by the Municipal Housing and Urban Planning Board of the Salamanca City Council.
This project also has the participation of several departments of the same consistory and the University of Salamanca (USAL), through the Geosciences Group and BISITE.
LIFE Vía de la Plata is a pilot project granted by the European Commission in its annual call for Climate Change program in progress. It aims to create a new Green Infrastructure corridor along the 6.9 kilometers of the route of this ancient Roman road in the municipality of Salamanca. It has an investment that exceeds 2.8 million euros, more than 1.4 million euros will be subsidized by European Comission. The initiative encompasses different key elements, whose convergence is a pioneer in a urban environment for sustainable development: adaptation to climate change, implementation of Green Infrastructure in a World Heritage City, recovery and improvement of the ecosystem services provided by this Green Infrastructure, machine learning and citizen involvement and participation. The project will run until the end of 2023 and it will implement 41 standard actions in different aspects related to flora, fauna, water, citizenship, culture and heritage. Nature-based solutions (NbS) will be applied to recover up to 49 different ecosystem services, ranging from aspects such as food supply, climate regulation or noise reduction, to regulation of air quality or the leisure and environmental education. The project also includes the monitoring of all these aspects with the installation of innovative measurement stations that will allow to obtain data series to be treated by means of Big Data methods to better plan and anticipate possible scenarios that help mitigate climate change in the city. LIFE Vía de la Plata also has an ambitious knowledge transference plan so that its results can be used by other Spanish and European cities.
The UNESCO Chair has been leading the research project Assesment of the Ecosystem Services in the Basque Country for more than ten years, with the support of the Basque Government and the County Council of Bizkaia. The main objective of the project is to identify which areas of the territory have high capacity to provide ecosystem services and to incorporate that knowledge into decision-making processes, which will help avoid or minimize the impacts on ecosystems and the services they provide.
