1.- To define concepts related to ecosystem services (ES).
2.- Identifying ecosystems and their ES: ecosystems map and ES catalogue.
3.- To analyse the current status of ES and of their main direct drivers of change over recent decades using different indicators.
4.- To define criteria and generate tools and models for decision making linked to integrated land use planning and management, via assessment and mapping of the main ES (Methodological Guide), in order to:
- understand the spatial distribution of ES.
- propose different levels of green infrastructure based on multifunctional areas (multiple ES).
- analyse synergies and trade-offs in order to increase the supply of ES.
- analyse conflicts between ES supply and demand with a view to prioritising actions.
- analyse future scenarios and identify possible responses.
5.- To analyse ways of integrating the ES approach into management:
- To develop a municipal-scale multifunctionality indicator that can be used for prioritising grants, actions, etc.
- To incorporate the ES approach in land use directives and plans (DOT, PTP, PRUG….). Practical guide for formulating land use and town plans and programmes which incorporate an ES approach.
- To develop a model for quantifying the value of those ES lost due to road building and the suitability of proposed measures for compensating this loss.
-
To develop a tool for the evaluation of the Green-Blue Infrastructure at municipal level in the Basque Country with the aim of enabling municipalities to evaluate the potential Green-Blue Infrastructure they have, as well as to assess which actions are the most appropriate to develop in their municipalities to increase and improve this Green-Blue Infrastructure according to the needs they have in their territories. This tool has an associated guide that explains the tool step by step, as well as the methodology and information used to develop it.
6.- To understand society’s view of ES: surveys, workshops and courses.
7.- To analyse ES on different scales: Urdaibai, Natura 2000 Network, Agroecosystems, Bilbao Metropolitan Greenbelt, Urola Costa Functional Area, urban ecosystems, aquatic ecosystems.
8.- To promote the results of the project via a dissemination and training strategy at the international, national and local levels.
9.- To encourage research in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
