PRACTICAL GUIDELINES FOR INTEGRATING ECOSYSTEM SERVICES INTO THE DESIGN OF SPATIAL AND TOWN PLANNING PROGRAMMES

One of the outcomes of the research project entitled Assessment of Ecosystem Services in the Basque Country is a set of  Practical guidelines for integrating ecosystem services into the design of spatial and town planning programmes, which offers a methodological framework for facilitating the incorporation of ecosystem services into spatial planning and urban development programmes for natural resources.

The guidelines include specialist content and verified methodologies which will help local and regional governments understand the contribution made by ecosystems to people’s health and well-being, thereby helping bring about a change in spatial planning and management through the prioritisation of more sustainable alternatives.

The guidelines were developed by the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Development and Environmental Education at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), in collaboration with the Bizkaia Provincial Council and with funding from the Basque Government Department of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Housing and the Bizkaia Provincial Council Department of Sustainability and the Natural Environment.
