Marine Ecosystem Services seminar

SEMINAR ON THE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES PROVIDED BY MARINE ECOSYSTEMS IN SPAIN

On Tuesday 25 February, researchers from the UNESCO Chair attended a technical seminar in Madrid entitled: ‘The Ecosystem Services provided by Marine Ecosystems in Spain. Analysis of the economic benefits and the impact of the measures proposed in the Spanish Programme of Marine Strategy Measures on ecosystem services’, organised by the Ministry for the Environmental Transition and Metro Economics.

The aims of the seminar were: a) to further our knowledge of the ecosystem services provided by the Spanish marine ecosystem and its different areas and socioeconomic value, in relation to the Framework Directive for Marine Strategies; and b) to discuss the methodology for estimating the socioeconomic benefits proposed in the Spanish Programme of Marine Strategy Measures.

The seminar was attended by many national experts, and during the sessions participants debated the different aspects involved in the socioeconomic assessment of marine ecosystem services. These types of event are important for highlighting the key nature of ecosystems and the services they provide, and for exploring how they can be integrated into different management policies.
