Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

Elective subject of the Journalism Degree. It analyzes the main characteristics of the recent historical evolution of Spain and the Basque Country, framing it in the European and world historical context, with the aim of better understanding today's society.

Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation

Know and express effectively (orally and in writing) the main lines of the historical evolution of Spain and the Basque Country during the 20th century.

Analyze texts, graphs and historical maps.

Review books and scientific articles.

Carry out academic papers on a topic or historical event, using specialized bibliography and other sources.

Learning outcomes:

- Identify the stages of the contemporary history of Spain and Basque Country.

- Present, orally and in writing, the characteristics of the main processes of the contemporary history of Spain and the Basque Country.

-Understand and place in their historical context historical documents of different formats (texts, maps, graphs, charts).

- Analyze and critically evaluate historiographical works on the recent past of Spain and the Basque Country.

I. SPAIN AND THE BASQUE COUNTRY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Mass society and crisis of the political system of the Restoration. The Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and the end of the Monarchy.

Socioeconomic modernization and political pluralism in the Basque Country.

II. THE SECOND REPUBLIC AND THE CIVIL WAR

The Spanish democracy: the Second Republic.

Between revolution and counterrevolution: the Civil War.

The struggle for autonomy and the first Basque Government.

III. FRANCO'S DICTATORSHIP

A long post-war period: economic autarchy and political repression.

From developmentalism to the crisis of late Francoism.

IV. TRANSITION AND DEMOCRACY

From dictatorship to democracy: the Transition. The Transition in the Basque Country and Basque autonomy.

Spain and the Basque Country in democracy.

Practical exercises: Reading and discussion of historical texts and articles, interpretation of maps and graphs.



MethodologyToggle Navigation

The professor will present the topics through lectures. The students will complete these explanations through activities and practical work: commenting on historical texts and monographic works, analyzing audiovisual materials, presenting and discussing in class readings or works done by the students (all these activities are a fundamental part of the continuous evaluation).

The evaluation of this subject is continuous through the work developed by the students throughout the course (commentaries of texts and audiovisual documents, critical reviews, monographic works, etc).

In accordance with art. 8.3 of the Regulations for the Evaluation of Students, students who wish to abandon the continuous evaluation and take the final exam must submit in writing to the teacher responsible for the subject the resignation to the continuous evaluation within the first nine weeks of the term. The final evaluation will consist of a written test to be developed on parts of the syllabus of the subject.
