Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation
The subject Theories of Communication is a discipline that arises with the aim of explaining the communicative phenomenon in its different modalities and forms. It studies the effects of communicative processes in our society and, in particular, those of mass communication. The subject presents the following areas of study and learning: standard and alternative communicative theories; structure of the communicative system and research carried out in this field.
Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation
As specified in the Journalism Degree, students of “Comunnication Theories” will develop the following skills:
G001- Use effective multimedia communication skills, knowing how to take advantage of the journalistic language that is most appropriate to the different media.
G0003 - To develop skills and apply techniques, technologies and resources to communication and information processes.
G0004 - To design correctly the formal and aesthetic aspects of the contents, according to the characteristics of the different media.
G0005 Devise, plan, implement and successfully manage information or communication projects.
G0006 - To apply the main genres and journalistic formats to informative works adequate to the each media.
As well as the following transversal competences:
CT7 - Critical thinking.
CT8 - Teamwork.
SPECIFIC COURSE COMPETENCIES:
C2CC01 - Acquire knowledge, identify and analyse information and communication in its historical, social, legal and international context.
C2CC03 - Analyse, design and plan the production of informative and communicative projects, applying techniques and technologies, adopting strategies for their development and the optimisation of teamwork.
C2CC05 - Develop strategies for oral, written and audiovisual expression and communication appropriate to the different genres and formats of the different media: radio, television and Internet; as well as making progress in the technological skills specific to these media.
C2CC06 - Understand and analyse the meaning and relevance of the different theories, concepts and methodologies in the field of information and communication.

Communication processes and information. Types of communication. Communication and culture.
Human communication. Perception of reality. The socialisation of realities.
Mass communication. Elements of mass communication. Functions of mass communication.
Theories of communication Standard models. Alternative models.
Information and disinformation. Apology and criticism of communication. Persuasion and manipulation.
Practical exercises to analyse information and communication in different contexts. Reading articles on human communication and on the functions and effects of communication. Reflection and debate on these articles. Viewing of feature films on human communication and on the elements and effects of social communication. Reflection work on these feature films.
MethodologyToggle Navigation
The teaching methodology will be based on lectures and practical classes. Theoretical aspects will be complemented with examples and practical cases to be commented on or solved by the students.

a) CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
1. THEORY (40%): 4 points
1.1. Written or oral examination, individual or test or tests to be developed, on the subject taught.
2. PRACTICAL WORK (60%): 6 points
- Work on the application of theory and current research on the different aspects related to communication.
REQUIREMENTS TO PASS THE SUBJECT IN THE CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT:
-Sit both parts (theory and practical).
-Pass the theoretical part (at least 2 out of 4), and obtain at least a 5 (out of 10) in the total of the subject.
- Students may waive the continuous assessment system. To do so, they will have to submit a written request to the teacher responsible for the subject before 18 April.
b) FINAL EVALUATION
1. THEORY (40%): 4 points.
- Individual examination, oral or written, or test, on the material taught and the practical application of these theoretical foundations.
2. RESEARCH WORK (60%): 6 points.
- Current research work on the different aspects related to communication.
- REQUIREMENTS TO PASS THE COURSE IN THE FINAL EVALUATION:
-Sit both parts (theory and practical).
-Pass the theory test (at least a 2 out of 4) and obtain at least a 5 (out of 10) in the total of the subject.
