Jesús de los Santos graduated in Chemistry from the University of the Basque Country in 1990 and received his Ph.D. degree in 1996 under the guidance of Professors Palacios and Aparicio. He was awarded with the Ph.D. Extraordinary Prize for his dissertation on the chemistry of β-functionalized phosphorus compounds. He then spent two years (1996-1997) at the Penn State University (Pennsylvania-USA) with Professor Weinreb as a postdoctoral fellow working on the total synthesis of marine alkaloids. He returned to the University of the Basque Country as a Junior Scientist (1998-2001) to the Prof. Palacios research group. In 2003, he got a Ramón y Cajal contract (2003-2008) and was appointed Associate Researcher in 2011. His research activity has been positively evaluated gaining recognition for five periods of 6 years on research work (sexenios, 1992-2021) from the national committee for the assessment of the research action (CNEAI). He is the author of more than 70 peer-review published works and more than 50 communications in national and international scientific meetings.
