Dr. Xabier E. Barandiaran is a philosopher of mind, biology, cognitive neuroscience, and technpolitics with a special focus on simulation modelling techniques as integrative tools for the study of cognitive and complex systems. He obtained his MSc on Evolutionary and Adaptive System from COGS, University of Sussex, UK, and his PhD on Mental Life. A Naturalised Approach to the Autonomy of Cognitive Agents (supervised by Prof. Alvaro Moreno) from the University of the Basque Country (Spain). He has been a visiting researcher at the KLI (Konrad Lorenz Institute, Austria), at the Autonomous Systems Lab (School of Industrial Engineering, Polytechnical University of Madrid), at the Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Robotics and COGS (University of Sussex, UK) and at the Centre de Recherche en Epistemologie Appliquée, CNRS - Ecole Polytechnique (Paris, France). Dr. Barandiaran currently holds a Lecturer tenure-track position at the University School of Social Work, Dept. of Philosophy, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and is a researcher at IAS-Research group (Dept. of Logic and Philosophy of Science, University of the Basque Country). He holds more over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals, books and conference proceedings and has collaborated with over 22 different researchers on the fields of theoretical biology, philosophy of complex systems, cognitive and neural sciences, philosophy of mind, social systems and free/open knowledge societies.
