Description and contextualization of the subject
Semantics and Pragmatics are complementary fields because their object of study is the meaning of the expressions of natural languages. The concept of meaning is heterogeneous, which means that it depends on different cognitive systems working hand in hand. The analysis of meaning, then, requires different methodologies and theoretical tools. The main goal of this subject is to introduce the methods of analysis used in Semantics and Pragmatics. This introduction will help the students to make their own analysis of semantic and pragmatic phenomena. To achieve this goal, the comprehension of the formal and the conceptual tools that are assumed in present-day studies of Semantics and Pragmatics is crucial. Equally, it is important to develop intuitions about semantic and pragmatic phenomena.
In addition to its theoretical component, the subject has an important practical component. The students will do exercises which will help them develop and improve both their meaning intuitions and their skills in applying the theoretical and technical tools provided.
