Having graduated in Biological Sciences in 1989, he went on to receive his doctorate in the psychodidactic program at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in 2002.

He was a science and mathematics teacher in primary and secondary education from 1991 to 2006 and began his professional career at the University of the Basque Country in 2006.

Currently, he is a full professor at the department of Didactics of Mathematics, Experimental and Social Sciences (University of The Basque Country, UPV/EHU) and his teaching activity is linked to the field of science education. Previously he was also an assistant professor in mathematics education.

He teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Basque, Spanish, and English and has been co-director of five doctoral theses in the field of education.

He was vice-dean and deputy director in the Faculty of Education in Bilbao (2013-2018) and deputy director in the University College of Teacher Training in Vitoria Gasteiz (2008-2011), both at the University of the Basque Country.

His research activity is focused on the comprehension processes of scientific concepts and has published several scientific papers in this field of Education (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2058-1941).

He is editor-in-chief of the journal Ikastorratza.e-journal on Didactics (ISSN: 1988-5911) and he was a member of the editorial board of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education journal (ISSN:1539-3429).
