(H-Index: 19; UPV/EHU Associated Professor in Cell Biology; Researcher in the CBET CRG). Coordinator of the official masters degree in “Environmental Contamination & Toxicology” in UPV/EHU. Researcher in the consolidated group “Cell Biology & Environmental Toxicology” of the Basque Government in the Plentzia Marine Station (PiE-UPV/EHU), he is responsible for the incorporation of PiE-UPV/EHU to the European Research Infrastructure EMBRC (European Marine Biology Resource Centre-www.embrc.eu) within the ESFRI roadmap. He is the Spanish scientific representative in the EMBRC implementation board, as appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy & Competitiveness (MINECO) since September 2014. His research activity is focused on two main interrelated lines (1) Cell & Molecular Biology of fish sex differentiation/determination (2) Applications of Cell Biology in Toxicology: toxicogenomics, molecular & cellular biomarkers of pollution, endocrine disruption. European PhD at the Univ. of the Basque Country (1998) on the “Characterization & biogenesis of peroxisomes in mussels”. MSc in Biological Electron Microscopy at the Univ. of Wales, Aberystwyth (1993). His teaching activity began in the Science & Technology Faculty in the year 2000. Together with other 12 European Universities he has participated in Student & staff exchange programmes within the «Environmental Sciences & Education» Erasmus/Socrates network & in funded projects for European Curriculum Development & the generation of open distance learning packages. He was the academic student exchange coordinator in Biology in the Fac. of Science & Technology 2010-2012. He has carried out research stays at the University of Wales (UK 1992-1993), Univ. of Amsterdam (1994); Univ. of Heidelberg (Germany, 1995-1996), the Fisheries Research Service, Aberdeen (Scotl&, 2001), & the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium, 2002). He has supervised 11 Master thesis in Environmental Contmaination & toxicology & in Marine Environment & Resources (Erasmus-Munsus). He has supervised 5 PhD thesis, 4 of them international, that has obtained the maximal calcification. He currently supervises 2 international PhD students. He has published 8 book chapters, 47 articles in international peer-reviewed journals & 8 articles in national ones, obtaining the 2nd & 3rd prizes to the best manuscripts in Science-didactics written in Basque, years 2006 & 2007. He is member of editorial board of the journal EKAIA published by the UPV/EHU. He has presented over 140 communications in national/international congresses. Two Spanish patents, & one International patent claim, have been issued from his research work. Invited conferences at Katholieke Univ. Leuven, CEFAS-Weymouth, Univ. Thessaloniki, Univ. de Santiago de Compostela, National Institute of Bioinformatics, Colegio Mayor Miguel de Unamuno; AZTI-Tecnalia, Akvaplan-NIVA, (Tromsø), CIC-Biogune, Glasgow Caledonian Univ., Univ. Exeter, Univ. Helsinki. He is or has been main researcher of 1 H2020 project, 3 projects of the Spanish MICINN & MINECO, 8 SAIOTEK projects of the Basque Government, aiming to generate molecular tools for the analysis of pollutant effects in marine organisms. Presently, he directs a project of the Spanish MINECO (ATREoVO) on the molecular characterization of the process of oocyte differentiation & atresia under exposure to xenohormones in fish; with applications in environmental monitoring, fisheries stock dynamics research & aquaculture.
