René Herrera

Biography

PhD in Renewable Materials Engineering from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He carried out a five-month postdoctoral research period at the Process Chemistry Centre of Åbo Akademi University in Turku (Finland). He was later awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Basque Government, which allowed him to carry out a research stay (2019–2021) at the InnoRenew CoE research center (Slovenia), within the wood modification group under the supervision of Dr. Anna Sandak. In 2022, he was granted a Juan de la Cierva–Incorporación contract at UPV/EHU, and in 2023, he received a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to develop the MULTIWOOD project at InnoRenew CoE, where he also served as Assistant Professor at the University of Primorska (Slovenia). He is currently a Ramón y Cajal researcher in the “Materials+Technologies” Group (GMT) at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at UPV/EHU.

Research

His research focuses on the development of multifunctional wood-based materials, with an emphasis on protection against biotic and abiotic agents through sustainable processes using bio-based residual resources. His work includes coating and impregnation treatments, physicochemical characterization, and the application of non-destructive analytical techniques based on spectroscopy and multivariate analysis.
